Carles Puyol to miss final La Liga ‘Clasico’ due to knee injury
Barcelona’s iconic captain, Carles Puyol will be unavailable for what will be his final La Liga ‘Clasico’ against Real Madrid on Sunday evening, as the 35-year-old continues to battle a lingering knee injury.
Last month, in a surprise press conference, Puyol announced he would be leaving his boyhood club after 15 years, with his future still yet to be announced.
However, the announcement meant that Puyol would have only one La Liga ‘Clasico’ left in his storied career.
Puyol has been training apart from the team to try and come back to action, but Barcelona-based Spanish sports daily Mundo Deportivo reports that Puyol will not be fit in time for this weekend’s highly-anticipated contest, which could use his leadership as Barcelona attempt to steal three points from the league leaders at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Yet, Puyol has several more opportunities to face Real Madrid before his Barcelona comes to an end, as the two sides will meet in the Copa del Rey final next month and could meet in the Champions League quarter or semi-finals, depending on Friday’s draw.
