Athletic Bilbao captain, Carlos Gurpegui will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, effectively ending his season.
The centre-back injured his knee during last weekend’s win over Getafe and after consulting the medical staff, the club announced that the 33-year-old has opted to undergo the procedure to clean the his knee.
Gurpegui has been a staple in Ernesto Valverde’s starting line up this season, playing 2385 minutes in 27 games, only missing games against Malaga and Almeria and half of last weekend’s match against Getafe, where he had to be subbed off due to the aforementioned injury.
Gurpegui has also been influencial in the on-field development of young French centre-back Aymeric Laporte, who has thrived this season and in the process has become one of the top young transfer prospects in Europe.
Athletic Bilbao have all but secured the fourth spot in La Liga, thus granting them the final place in next season Champions League and it is likely that Mikel San Jose will be tasked with replacing the captain of the remaining nine matches of the season.
