Carles Puyol to travel to Madrid without medical clearance

Barcelona captain, Carles Puyol will reportedly travel with the team to Madrid today, where he will be included in manager Tata Martino’s 21-man squad for Wednesday evening’s Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid, despite the 35-year-old not having received medical clearance from the club medical staff.

This may very well be Puyol’s last Champions League appearance in a Barcelona shirt and the Captain is adamant about being available to help his team, due to the loss of Gerard Pique leaving just Javier Mascherano and Marc Bartra to man the backline.

Barcelona had held training on Monday after being given Sunday off and while all players participated in drills, Puyol did specific recovery exercises, as he had yet to be cleared to join the team.

Nevertheless, Puyol will travel, will take part in the team’s training session at 6:30pm at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday evening, where Martino will then discuss the captain’s status for the 2nd leg tie in his pre-match press conference.
