Rodas: We must be happy with another year in the Primera

Levante defender Héctor Rodas sees nothing wrong with the demands and ambition of the fans, though he’s also pointed out that they have to be realistic and that for his club to remain in the Primera, is a success within itself.

Héctor Rodas LevanteAt a press call on Wednesday, the simple message from Levante defender Héctor Rodas was one of admiration for the demanding nature of the fans, who always want more for their team, but also a reminder of where the club came from, not so long ago in the past.

“We should always be ambitious and we understand how demanding they are, but at the same time, we must be happy with another year in the Primera. The fans should always be demanding, but we also have to be realistic, that another season in the Primera is something fantastic.”ç

A product of the youth system at Levante and aside from a brief loan spell at Elche, at just 26-years-old, Rodas can be seen as one of the veterans of the side, who remembers darker days for the club, in the not so distant past.

“Just six years ago, at best we’d have about two-thousand people in the stadium and we were suffering to avoid relegation to the Segunda B.”

Having already reached 41 points and effectively safe from any chance of relegation, though Rodas believes everyone should now be much calmer, he still feels his team should fight for more points.

“There have been other years where it’s taken up to the last weekend or two, before we’ve secured our permanence and where we’ve suffered more than ever. We have to be happy that this season, we’re more or less there and safe. We don’t want to let any more games escape us though and we want to guarantee things as soon as we can.”

That opportunity will come with a regional derby away at Elche on Friday night. Rodas acknowledged that it’s an important game for both teams.

“We’re going there with the desire to mathematically secure our permanence. Both for us and for them, this is like a final. We want to get it sorted and we’re really looking forward to the game.”

Levante are currently in negotiations with manager Joaquín Caparrós, to extend his stay beyond the end of this season. Rodas appreciates the work he’s done and hopes the experienced Andaluz coach will be in charge of the team next season.

“The manager has done a great job here. It’s been one of the toughest years, especially considering all the changes in the squad, important players leaving, yet he’s still taken things forward. He’s a winner, the players all depend on him and I really hope he stays.”
