Gaizka Mendieta has said that the El Clasico meeting between Real Madrid and Barcelona is the best derby in world football.
The 38-year-old former Barcelona midfielder, who played in the 2002/2003 El Clasico while on loan at the Catalan club, insists that their is no bigger game in football because of the atmosphere and talent on display.
“I was lucky enough to have played in the fixture when I was at Barcelona. I think that is the best game that you could possibly play in at club level,” Mendieta told

“I played in the Rome derby between Lazio and Roma which was nearly at that level in terms of intensity and I know that derbies in England are very passionate but for me the Clasico is the most amazing derby there is, anywhere.

“There will be 110,000 people at the Nou Camp which will be absolutely incredible. It is so good it is almost indescribable. They are eternal rivals.

“The rivalry between the two clubs is an historic thing but it is so intense because these days in Spain it is about Barcelona and Real Madrid more than ever.”
