Catalan giants FC Barcelona are rumored to be considering a move this summer for Bayern Munich defensive midfielder Javi Martinez with Andoni Zubizarreta set to overhaul the squad in a rebuilding project.
After a disappointing season that could see Barcelona finish the year without a trophy, the Catalans are planning a rebuilding project this summer and are preparing to overhaul the entire squad with sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta leading the charge.
Above all else, the biggest area that the club needs to address is the defense with Barcelona’s weaknesses at the back continually coming up in important matches, and the Catalans are adamant that they will put an end to their frailties once and for all this summer.
According to a recent report from Catalan-based sports daily, Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are heavily interested in Bayern Munich’s Javi Martinez, who can play as either a center-back or in the pivot and was a player heavily targeted by the Catalans before leaving Athletic Club Bilbao two years ago for the Germans.
The report claims that Bayern Munich will look to make changes this summer after being eliminated from the Champions League and could off-load the Basque in order to clear up space in the squad; furthermore, it is also mentioned that the 25-year-old has yet to close the door on a potential exit which has Barcelona monitoring the situation closely.
It is believed that the Catalans are looking for a new center-back, but are also interested in finding a player that could feature in multiple positions as well, something Javi Martinez has excelled in during his career.
