Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone refused to be downbeat, after his side fell to defeat at Levante, which leaves the title race in La Liga wide open still.

Diego Simeone Atlético MadridAtlético Madrid could have been a step closer to winning the title, had they secured the three points at Levante on Sunday. They left with a 2-0 defeat though and after the game, Simeone refused to take a negative view and simply pointed out: “It means that La Liga will be even more fun now.”

“We’ve always said that we’re competing against two really powerful rivals and it’s difficult to see them losing games. Today it was our turn to lose. We have three fantastic and emotion filled weeks ahead of us, of pure football.”

Looking at the result itself, Simeone was of the opinion that perhaps the outcome will serve a warning, or a timely kick up the backside, to ensure his team keeps fighting for the wins they’ll need to claim the title.

“The defeat today is the best thing that could happen. There’s three more weeks ahead to keep working hard, of high intensity. It’s an ideal time for the guys, for the players.”

The Argentine coach also believes their destiny is still firmly in their own hands, knowing that they must now win their matches against Málaga and Barcelona.

“We’re still depending on ourselves. We have to pull out all the stops in all the finals that remain for us.”
