Alves: Barcelona should’ve handled Abidal’s situation a little better

Barcelona right-back, Dani Alves was candid in his criticism of the club for the way in which the handled the dismissal of his good friend and fan favourite, Eric Abidal, choosing to not renew the contract of the player after eluding to the fact that they would after he returned to active football following his well-documented cancer battle and liver replacement.

In an interview with RAC1, Alves spoke about the club’s handling of the situation, which left a lot of the players and fans miffed and disappointed.

“Eric should be here, they should honour him because he’s a lad that has a heart bigger than this club and everyone else.  He’s one of these people who doesn’t think about himself, but thinks about everyone else and they should’ve handled his situation with a bit more care.”

Abidal and Alves remain close friends, with the Frenchman, now the captain of Ligue 1 side, AS Monaco, congratulated Alves on his recent call up to the Brazilian national team’s 2014 World Cup squad.
