Jorge Jesus: We’re not favorites, but we’re confident we can win
Benfica manager, Jorge Jesus refused to label his side the favourites in Wednesday evening’s Europa League final against Sevilla, but did stress that the lessons learned last year and the Portuguese league title have given them both experience and confidence going into the match.
In his pre-match press conference, Jesus feels he’s finally seeing the fruits of his “five-year” plan and admits that they continue to become strong and gain more and more experience as they years go on.
“Over the past year we’ve tried going down a similar route to last season, at least in getting to the final. Now, our know-how comes in. We’ve been here before and are stronger for the experience, we know what to expect. In the past we’ve gone match by match but over the past year it’s been taking things final by final.”
Jesus isnsited that there are no favourites and that “Sevilla have history in this competition,” but will be looking to break the 52-year curse that has hung over Benfica.
“It’s up to us to break the curse; the opportunity to lay that ghost to rest gives us greater strength. It’s going to be broken one day. Why not here in Turin?”
