Leo Baptistão becomes the first player to win La Liga and get relegated in the same season
Atletico Madrid striker, Leo Baptistão has been on loan with relegated side Real Betis since January and following Atlético’s 1-1 draw against Barcelona making them the 2013-14 La Liga champions, which will award Baptistão with not only a winner’s medal but the unique title of being the first player ever to win La Liga and get relegated in the same season.
The Brazilian-born striker made the move from Rayo Vallecano to Atletico Madrid after a stellar 2012-13 in Vallecas, and while promising, he was given very few minutes behind in-form strikers Diego Costa and David Villa.
Atletico Madrid made the decision this January to send him on loan, and while they received several offers, including one from Rayo Vallecano, Betis ponied up with €2 million to take the forward on a six-month loan and help save them from relegation.
Baptistão wasn’t able to save the Andalusian club, who were the first team to be mathematically relegated to the Segunda this season, while Atletico Madrid have completed this historic feat of winning their first La Liga title in almost 20 years.
While Baptistão would have most definitely have liked to stay with Atleti and won the title, he still gets his name in the history book for being part of the team, along with his new title.
