Athletic Club Bilbao president, Josu Urrutia announced that star forward, Iker Muniain has penned a contract extension that will keep him at the New San Mames through the 2016-17 season, while also raising his release clause to a record €45 million.
The club made the announcement via their official website, as they tie down one of the most promising players for the next three years.
“Athletic Club and the player Iker Muniain have penned an agreement on a contract renewal which will keep the player with the club until 30th June 2017 and his release clause has been raised from €37.5 million to €45 million.”
Athletic’s priority this summer was reaching a contract renewal agreement with Muniain, even before signing any new players, so as not see another promising young player leave the club, as was the case recently when Ander Herrera paid his release clause to join Manchester United.
Muniain’s renewal eliminates any chance of the player moving until 2017, which is cause for celebration in Bilbao.
