Messages of sympathy flood in for the injured Neymar
Brazil’s star player Neymar was stretchered off after a collision with Colombia’s Juan Zuniga in Brazil’s quarter final match in Fortaleza. The 22 year old, who had been in stunning form for his country, will miss the remainder of the tournament, with doctors citing a recovery period of 4-6 weeks.
Since the incident, teammates and several other prominent figures, both in Brazil and elsewhere have offered their messages of support for the young Brazilian, as reported by Sky Sports.
Fellow attacker Fred took to social media to make it clear that the unfortunate injury will only further motivate the team to win the trophy as a dedication to their teammate.
“We have one more reason to play with heart in this Cup. Neymar, rest assured that our group loves you and give life to win this title for you. You were and continue to be the ace and the soul of our team. The whole of Brazil is praying for you!”
Teammates Paulinho and Willian also posted messages of support for Neymar on their twitter accounts, accompanied by photos with the Brazilian star.
Captain Thiago Silva, who will also sit out the semi-final match against Germany due to suspension, was in a similar mind frame as the rest of the Brazilian squad, citing that it was imperative that the squad rally and try to win the competition despite complicated circumstances.
“We have proposed to win the World Cup for Neymar because of the injury he suffered. This moment could mark the start of a revolution for us. He hopes and expects a lot from this group, and this could unite us, it could give us more determination to win.”
As reported by the Daily Mail, Silva talked about the importance of Neymar to the national side, but pointed out that there are other players who are available who can and will need to step in if Brazil are to progress.
“Neymar is very important for us. We depend a lot on him and he makes the difference in our group, but in the place of Neymar, we can play either Willian or Bernard, who have similar characteristics. This is the moment to show the strength of the squad.”
Other prominent figures have also voiced their support for Neymar, including Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen, basketball player Lebron James and even the president of Brazil, Dilma Roussef, who tweeted: “All our support to Neymar #ForcaNeymar.”
Brazil will have to find an alternative source of goals against Germany, as Neymar was their top scorer with 4 goals to his name. Ahead of the clash, both Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski of the German national team were quick to offer support for Neymar during this difficult time.
“Neymar, I am unhappy. Get well soon,” Ozil tweeted, while his teammate Podolski added: “Happy with our victory today, can’t wait to face Brazil, sad for Neymar. Hope you get better soon #ForcaNeymar.”
