Catalan radio has reported that Barcelona star Xavi is set to leave the club this summer to join MLS side New York City FC, along with former teammate David Villa.
For the past few weeks, rumors have suggested that Xavi’s time at Barcelona had come to an end and that the World Cup winning midfielder was set to make the move to a club in Qatar.
However, new claims suggest that Qatar will not be Xavi’s new destination, with Catalan radio reporting that the 34-year-old will in fact be making the switch to the MLS to join New York City FC, along with former Barcelona teammate David Villa who confirmed he was joining the American club a few weeks ago.
Radio Catalonia had previously reported that Xavi would be leaving Barcelona this summer, but were unable to reveal what his next destination would be until this point.
It is believed that Xavi was indeed set to join a Qatar-based club this summer, but only recently the two sides ran into difficulties, and NYCFC’s offer became very enticing to the Catalan maestro.
Radio Catalonia also reports that the presence of Davi Villa and Frank Lampard at New York City FC played a major role in his decision, which is yet to be officially announced by either the club or player.
