Mathieu joins Valencia for South American tour after failing to secure transfer to Barcelona
Valencia has refused to accept Barcelona’s offer for French centre-back, Jeremy Mathieu, despite the 30-year-old’s public plea for the club to accept the offer from the Blaugrana, forcing Mathieu to join the team for their pre-season tour of South America.
Mathieu recently admitted that he is still holding out hope that the two sides can agree to an acceptable to agreement, but in the meantime, he remains a Valencia player and thus, must honour his contractual obligations.
New manager Nuno and sporting director Rufete decided that the player, who refused to play and risk getting injured ahead of his move to Barcelona, would join the team when they fly to Peru on the 23rd, regardless of the state of negotiations.
Should Barcelona agree to meet Valencia’s €20 million asking price, Mathieu will fly back to Spain and finalise his transfer, but if not, he will be adhering to his contract and avoiding sanctions or ill will with the club or his teammates, should he remain at Mestalla this coming season.
