Gracia: I’m very pleased with how the game unfolded
Malaga manager, Javi Gracia was happy with his side’s controversial 1-0 La Liga opening win against Athletic Bilbao, which saw his side claim victory with a Luis Alberto penalty and saved by an annulled goal from Gorka Iraizoz.
In his post-match press conference, Gracia spoke about the win and the two red card expulsions.
“Defensively, the team did very well, so I was happy about that.
“I’m very pleased with how the game unfolded. We played with two men down, we fought and the fans stepped up. I have to thank them because it was crucial to start the season off with these three points.
“The team came out strong looking for points, with excitement and secured the win in the first half. It’s only three points, but we know them very well and this is not only rewarding our work today, but throughout the entire pre-season.”
Gracia then spoke about the controversial ending that saw Athletic’s goalkeeper, Gorka Iraizoz’s goal annulled.
“I’ve only seen a little bit of what happened, the expulsions were from fighting for a ball where one player responded, without the intention of doing harm. The other was in midfield, where Antunes went a little high and the referee felt it was enough to send him off, I have nothing more to say.
“I saw the goal, he looked more like a striker than a goalkeeper, I saw the linesman immediately raise his flag but I don’t know.”
