Valladolid took a huge step toward a return to La Liga with a 1-0 away win over Alcorcon in the Segunda play-off final first leg at Estadio Santo Domingo on Wednesday night.

Valladolid had beaten Cordoba to reach the final and they bossed Segunda’s surprise package Alcorcon from the start, Javi Guerra was causing Anquela’s side all sorts of problems.

Guerra broke the deadlock on the half hour mark after taking Nauzet’s cross from the right and placing the ball past home keeper Manu Herrera.

It remained the only goal of the game as Alcorcon tried to find an equalizer in the second half, buoyed on by their 5,000 fans but to no avail.

Valladolid will head back to the Zorilla stadium for the second leg with the added advantage of an away goal, leaving Alcorcon with it all to do on Saturday night.

Deportivo La Coruna and their Galician neighbours Celta Vigo finished first and second in Spain’s second tier to win automatic promotion.
