Messi headbutts and grabs throat of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa in Gamper Trophy win

Barcelona forward Leo Messi returned for his first pre-season match following his extended holiday and capped off the win over AS Roma by scoring and headbutting Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

Messi missed the team’s pre-season tour of the United States after being granted an extended holiday following Argentina’s Copa America final loss to Chile and his first match back after a week of training was Wednesday’s Joan Gamper Trophy match against Roma.

Neymar scored in his first game with the Blaugrana this pre-season but things took a dramatic turn when Messi headbutted Roma’s Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and proceeded to put his hand around the player’s throat before being separated by players from both sides.

Messi was understandably upset after an excessive foul by Yanga-Mbiwa on the play before set-up the Argentine’s hostile reaction when the play went in hard again just moments later.

Messi took offence to Yanga-Mbiwa’s foul and both were given a yellow card by the referee.

Messi seemed to quickly get over the incident by scoring the second of Barcelona’s three goals t0 secure the title for Luis Enrique’s side, but the main headline of the evening will not be Rakitic’s brilliant goal but Messi’s fury getting the better of him.
