Gerard Pique gets sent off for profanity-laced rant against linesman

Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique was sent off in Monday’s Spanish Super Cup loss for a profanity-laced rant against the linesman, ending Barcelona’s hopes of winning six titles in 2015.

In the 55th minute, Pique was sent off with a straight red card for protesting an uncalled offside by Oscar De Marcos, ending his side’s hopes of mounting a comeback in the 2nd leg of their Spanish Super Cup tie against Athletic Bilbao.

Pique was seen screaming at the linesman for the non-call and referee Velasco Carballo explained the details of Pique’s profanity-laced explosion in his post-match notes.

“In the 55th minute, the player (3) Piqué Bernabéu, Gerard was sent off for the following reason: screaming at the assistant referee: ‘I shit on your whore mother.'”

The translation is more shocking than if the phrase were heard in Spain, but not by much, and the action could cost Pique to not only miss Barcelona’s season opener against Athletic Bilbao this Sunday at San Mames, but could carry with it a total of five games, the same amount Sergio Ramos miss for a far lesser “shameless” comment to referee Ayza Gamez in January 2013 in the Copa del Rey in a match against Celta Vigo.

The rules explicitly state that a player found to be shouting obscenities or insults at the referee “could carry a ban from four to 12 games.”

Francisco Rubio of the RFEF’s Competition Committee is expected to rule on the player’s fate as soon as Wednesday, which could see the player miss almost three months of action if given the maximum penalty, a devastating sentence that will surely be appealed by Barcelona.
