Iago Aspas leads Celta Vigo to first place in La Liga
Iago Aspas led his boyhood club to a much needed 1-2 2015-16 La Liga season opening victory over Levante to lead Barcelona, Atletico and Real Madrid in the race for the La Liga title.
Former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas returned to his boyhood club Celta Vigo this past summer and was determined to not only get back the confidence he lost at Liverpool and Sevilla but lead Celta Vigo to European glory. While the Galicians may not be bound for the Champions League just yet, they are definitely on the right track as they go to sleep on Sunday evening as La Liga leaders on their 92nd birthday.
The match started with Simao earning a straight red card in the 4th minute to leave Levante with 10 men against a very potent Celta attack and while Levante managed to hold their own against the Galicians, they were unable to keep Celta off the board for long as Orellana scored in the 40th minute to give his side a lead going into the break.
As the second half began, Levante remained positive as former Almeria star Verza scored an equaliser in the 54th minute but the wheels came off for Levante as the prodigal son, Iago Aspas, returned to the club and scored the winning goal in the 78th minute.
Aspas’ goal puts Celta Vigo as the La Liga leaders for the first round of play, pending the result of Granada vs Eibar on Monday evening, made all the more special that it comes on the club’s 92nd birthday from a player who was born and bred in the club.
