Málaga 0-0 Eibar: Another toothless performance by Málaga

by Geoff Gillingham | Posted on Sunday, September 13th, 2015

Three games into the La Liga season and Málaga are yet to register a goal scored. The lack of creativity was evident from early on in the game, but Eibar did well to frustrate the home side.

Malaga Eibar Amrabat

The first half didn’t have a plethora of chances, yet there easily could have been a goal.

Within the first ten minutes Charles had two chances for Málaga.

Nordin Amrabat played in a ball behind Eibar’s defence on six minutes, but Asier Riesgo was quick off of his line to prevent Charles from getting a shot away. Ten minutes in, Arthur Boka’s free-kick was crossed into the area and Charles was inches away from heading in as it bounced along the area.

There were two penalty appeals, one for Eibar and one for Málaga.

Eibar had countered and Sergi Enrich, playing up top on his own, flicked the ball up onto Marcos Angeleri’s hand and it went for a corner, but the referee gave nothing.

Málaga’s penalty claim came after Eibar left-back Alberto Luna’s pass was intercepted by Roberto Rosales and he dribbled into the area and went down under contact from Gonzalo Escalante. Both penalties, if given, would have been generous.

One minute after Málaga’s appeal, Eibar had a great chance to take the lead after Saúl Berjón took on and beat Rosales, then fizzed in a low cross along the area but Keko’s effort from a couple of yards out went over the bar.

Asier Riesgo had a good game for Eibar and made a vital save just before half-time from Charles following a Málaga counter-attack where Nordin Amrabat put in an excellent cross for the Brazilian, but it was well saved.

Six minutes into the second half, Rosales played the ball down the line to Amrabat and his cross into the area was cleared goalwards by Eibar centre-back Mauro Dos Santos and forced a good saved from Riesgo.

There were two good chances late on.

With five minutes left, Keko put a good cross to the back post and Juncà’s header fell to Borja Bastón in the area. He used his stomach to control it and then, under pressure from ex-Eibar man Raúl Albentosa, hit his effort inches wide.

Málaga had a corner punched out by Riesgo with two minutes to go and Fernando Tissone’s ambitious effort from distance deflected off of Duje Čop and went just wide, but it easily could have gone in.

La Rosaleda is not proving to be a happy place for Málaga right now as they haven’t won a game there since a 2-0 victory over Córdoba in March.

One facet that will be really frustrating Javi Gracia is the lack of creativity that his team are showing.

The 0-0 result means that Málaga are yet to score this season, while Eibar currently sit fifth after gaining seven points from a possible nine; a fantastic achievement after being technically relegated last May.
