Griezmann and Cristiano headline UEFA’s Champions League team of the week
Atletico Madrid winger Antoine Griezmann and Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo are the lone La Liga representatives in UEFA’s first Champions League team of the week for the 2015-16 season.
In a departure from last season, Spain had just two players in UEFA’s Champions League team of the week and the two players were forwards whose goal-scoring prowess propelled their side to victory to get their European campaigns off to a sizzling start.
Antoine Griezmann scored two goals in only a matter of minutes as his Atletico side defeated Galatasaray on Tuesday evening in Turkey, giving Los Colchoneros the lead in their group.
Meanwhile back in Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo continued his incredible goal-scoring form, scoring a hat-trick to compliment Karim Benzema’s openeing goal as Rafa Benitez’s first Champions League match as Real Madrid coach ended with a 4-0 victory over Ukranian side Shakhtar Donetsk.
Cristiano has scored an incredible 8 goals in his past two matches as he looks to dominate the competition again this season.
Roma defender Alessandro Florenzi became an overnight sensation following his side’s 1-1 draw against Barcelona, when the Italian saw goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen off his line and fired a shot from midfield for the equaliser.
Zenit St. Petersburg’s Hulk was also named to the squad for his brace that silenced Mestalla in the Russians’ 2-3 win over Valencia on Wednesday evening.
