Celta Vigo 1-1 Deportivo La Coruna: Galician Derby ends in spirited draw

Celta Vigo and Deportivo La Coruna were the top two clubs in La Segunda last year and the stakes were even higher as they battled for supremacy and promotion to the Primera last season.  Now that they have finally made it to the top flight, the first Primera Division Galician Derby in five years promised to be the match of the week.

Celta and Depor came out with all the excitement one would hope for in a derby with three important points on the line, as both are desperate to elevate their status and prove their worth in the Primera.  However, despite the 1-1 draw, this match was well fought with both sides challenging each other until the bitter end.

The home side would strike first as Celta`s Mario Bermejo took advantage of a fast break opportunity and fired a right footed shot into the back of the net to put Celta up 1-0 in the eighth minute.

Feeling the pressure of being behind in the important match, and desperate to change their fortunes, Deportivo launched an assault firing off several shots on Javi Varas, who capable handled the barrage.

However, fortunes would change in the 29th minute as a pass by Juan Carlos Valeron found a waiting Juan Dominguez at the centre of the box, who fired it into the right corner past keeper, Javi Varas.

Celta had a few chances before the break, but were handled by Depor keeper, Aranzubia as both teams left the pitch with a 1-1 draw at half.

Following the break, both sides came out swinging, with Celta taking the advantage, but were a bit to aggressive, as Celta`s Gustavo Cabral received his second yellow card of the evening and leaving Celta with 10-men.

However, Depor were unable to capitalize on red card expulsion as they failed to convert their seven shots they took for the remainder of the half.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but the advantage clearly belongs to Celta, who were able to fend off a powerful Depor attack, with just 10-men for the majority of the second half in a very spirited derby.
