Levante 3-1 Granada: Martins double puts JIM’s men fourth

Levante beat Granada 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Ciutat de Valencia thanks to goals from Pedro Rios and a Obafemi Martins double.

Levante UD celebrated their 100th La Liga match at their Ciudad de Valencia home in comfortable fashion, with their fourth consecutive win in all competitions.

Dominating the majority of the first-half, Levante had Granada penned in their own half. The Granada defence managed to resist what was thrown at them during the early exchanges, until they pressed the self-destruct button.

A calamitous error from Granada central defender Íñigo López on the edge of his own area. Obafemi Martins then had all the time in the world, to smash the ball past Toño and give his side the lead in the 11th minute.

From there, it was Levante who were in control. More precise and composed with their play, whereas Granada gave the ball away too cheaply. When the Granadino side did push deep into the Levante half, they simply couldn’t find a final pass or shot, with any precision at all.

Towards the end of the first-half, Granada did manage to rally a little, probing at the Levante area, but lack of precision and robust defending from Levante, saw the home side retain the lead come the break.

Granada made changes at half-time, as Floro Flores replaced Moisés Hurtado, in order to play with two strikers. Levante retained their composure, even as Granada managed to push forward a little better than they had in the first-half.

As Granada huffed and puffed, trying to find a way through, Levante sat deeper and seemed content to hit on the counter. One such counter lead to a second goal for Martins in the 60th minute, as he broke through to slot the ball beneath the body of Toño. Now they were in complete control.

Granada threw everything forward, but again, a lack of accuracy in the final third meant they couldn’t take what chances came their way. Another counter from Levante and this time substitute Pedro Rios scored, as the Granada defence couldn’t get back quickly enough to cover.

Again, Granada pushed and probed. El-Arabi, Floro Flores and Ighalo, all with half-chances, but nothing strong enough to sting the palms of Munúa. Eventually a breakthrough did come however, following good work from Ighalo, who slotted the ball out to El-Arabi to fire home and pull a goal back.

Too little too late though and as Granada toiled to reduce the deficit further, Levante could have made it a rout, when they hit on the counter.

A comfortable win for Levante, and a great way to mark the milestone for their stadium. For Granada meanwhile, a second consecutive defeat and plenty of head-scratching for their manager Anquela to do.
