Alves: Messi and Villa argument, it sells papers

Barcelona right-back Dani Alves has insisted that a reported dispute between David Villa and Lionel Messi during the Champions League defeat to Celtic is was invented by Madrid press.

Reports across the internet and in Madrid stated that Messi had once again berated Villa on the pitch during the 2-1 Champions League defeat on Wednesday night but Alves has dismissed the bust-up, claiming it is made up to sell papers.

“This is the type of news that sells papers, in stadiums there’s always a lot of noise and sometimes you have to shout in order to be heard,” he told a press conference on Friday.

“We know where this is coming from, people have been talking about how Ronaldo behaves and with the Ballon d’Or coming up, this type of story sells a lot of papers.

“Ronaldo is not behind Messi because of how he acts, but because Messi is a better footballer. While Messi continues playing at this level, Cristiano will never win the Ballon d’Or.

“I hope they award the Ballon d’Or to the best player, but they can give it to whoever they want, as far as I’m concerned. Whatever I say about the Ballon d’Or will not sell any newspapers tomorrow.”
