Athletic Bilbao 2-1 Sevilla: Pressure relieved on Bielsa after victory

Athletic Bilbao defeated Sevilla 2-1 at home at San Mames in a result that is sure to relieve some of the pressure on both coach Marcelo Bielsa and the players.

The Basque side opened the scoring after 30 minutes when Oscar de Marcos slotted home Jon Aurtenetxe’s cross from close range.

Four minutes later Carlos Gurpegi could have doubled the lead but his header went over the bar but Bielsa’s men did get on the score sheet shortly after.

Markel Susaeta, recently called up for the Spanish national side turned in Aritz Aduriz’s pass.

However, Sevilla came back strong in the second half and it was back to the walls stuff for Bilbao.

Federico Fazio headed just over on the hour mark before the lively Baba made Gorka Iraizoz show his goalkeeping talent.

The Andalusian visitors were given a lifeline with 10 minutes remaining when Alvaro Negredo scored from 12 yards but it proved to little too late as Bielsa’s Bilbao soldiered on for three points.
