Barcelona 5-1 Athletic Bilbao: Vilanova’s men extend lead over rivals

Barcelona remain unbeaten after easily beating Athletic Bilbao 5-1 at Camp Nou on Saturday night.

The win has seen the Catalans record the best ever start to a season by any Spanish club with 13 wins and one draw from their opening 14 games.

The hosts took the lead through Gerard Pique who tapped in from two-yards after Cesc Fabregas’s effort had been saved.

Lionel Messi doubled their lead shortly after with a chip over Athletic keeper Gorka Iraizoz, although confirmation over whether it was Messi’s goal is still pending after Fernando Amorebieta guided it into the net.

It was 3-0 in the final minutes of the first half after Adriano got himself on the score sheet for the second consecutive game.

Cesc Fabregas made it four after the interval and Messi was on hand to make it five after Ibai Gomez scored a consolation goal for the much troubled visitors.
