Javi Varas: We have to go to San Mames to win

Celta Vigo goalkeeper Javi Varas has left his team mates and supporters in no doubt as to what is required in this weekend’s upcoming fixture against Athletic Bilbao.

“We have to go to San Mames to win. The team is in a good moment and we must try to provide continuity on Saturday against a great team like Athletic,” he told reporters.

Celta’s number one believes a win at the ‘Cathedral’ is not beyond his team but has spoken of the “suffocating pressure” that the fans provide at a full San Mames.

He went on: “It’s always tight against Athletic at San Mames. It is a very intense atmosphere and the constant pressure in the midfield to the forwards encourages the fans.’

Despite Athletic being “very strong” at home, Varas is sure his team will go to San Mames in the right frame of mind to be going for the three points against the team coached by Marcelo Bielsa.

“It’ll be a tough game, but we will not go out looking for a draw, we must go to win. Athletic is a team that demands a lot physically and we’ll have to work hard to score. There is a brutal pressure exerted in all areas of the field, as with all teams [coached by] Bielsa,” he added.

When asked about the last match, a draw against Levante, who equalised through Roger Marti in the last-minute, Varas concluded “I prefer to see the positive side because we gained a point and we are still in a comfortable position in the table”.
