Messi suffers bruised knee in Benfica draw

by Tom Conn | Posted on Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

Barcelona striker, Leo Messi suffered what appeared to be a serious left knee injury in the final minutes of Wednesday’s Champions League draw against Benfica.

In the final 10 minutes of the match, Messi performed a fairly routine play, when Benfica goalkeeper, Morases challenged the Barcelona star, who fell to the ground clutching his left knee.

As play halted and Messi writhed in pain, he was forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher.

However, according to Barcelona-based radio station, Radio Catalunya, the injury to Messi is not as serious as once thought and and has been ruled as a bruised knee, while Barcelona have officially confirmed the status of the player, stating that he will undergo further tests to determine the extent of the injury.

This news comes as a sigh of relief to first place Barcelona, who have seen Messi score 21 goals in league play this season, while it also leaves the door open for the striker to still break Gerd Mueller’s record, depending on how long before he is cleared to play.
