Herrera: We have clear problems in the penalty area

Celta Vigo manager, Paco Herrera blamed his side’s 0-1 defeat to Real Betis on “serious problems” in the penalty area, a problem that has plagued them the entire season.

paco_herreraIn his post-match press conference, Herrera analysed the match and lamented his side’s inability to convert scoring opportunities in what he feels was a clearly winnable affair against the 5th place Andalusians.

“We are not at all pleased because this is an unfair result, but that is football.  This has been a recurring problem in several games.  We clearly have problems within the penalty area and that’s not helping us.  Our football eventually dies in the penalty area.

“We had clear scoring opportunities; we don’t accept that it is difficulty assimilating.  There’s no getting around it, we need to continue and move up the table.

“Our life in La Liga continues to get complicated because we keep making mistakes.  I don’t believe Wednesday’s match against Real Madrid helped us, the effort that day cost them today, the players weren’t fresh.”

Herrera rejected the idea that the problems were down to a lack of concentration.

“The desire of wanted to score in the end can distract you.  I already told my players that the victory comes from defending well and we didn’t accomplish that.  Today’s match should’ve been 0-0.  We cannot afford to make those mistakes because out efforts deserved at least a draw.  Betis’ play shouldn’t have ended in a goal, it was a simple play.  We failed and we played the price.”
