Lionel Messi wins the prestigious honour, during the annual FIFA awards ceremony, for the fourth consecutive time.

Beating his Barcelona team-mate Andres Iniesta and Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo, it was Lionel Messi who took to the stage to claim the FIFA Balon d’Or award as the world’s best player of 2012. The fourth consecutive time he’s won the award and overtaking previous three-time winners, Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten and Michel Platini.

Humble as ever, Lionel Messi graciously accepted his award.

“It’s amazing to receive this award for the fourth time and is continued. It’s awesome. I want to share this and I’d like to thank my fellow Barcelona companions, especially Andres (Iniesta).

“I’m proud to be with you today and every day to train and play with you. Also to my colleagues of the Argentina team, to all the people who voted for me. I’m very nervous… Also to my family and friends and, finally, especially my wife and my son, who is the most beautiful thing God gave me “
