Qatar paid £3m euros for Spain friendly
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have confirmed that Qatar have paid 3 million euros for the privilege of seeing World and European champions Spain on their doorstep.
The main stumbling block was with FIFA who had arranged for a match to be played on the same day in the same stadium. FIFA generally do not recognise friendly internationals if a country plays on the same day in it’s own territory as has happened with a Qatar v Malaysia match due to take place.
However, after a request from Qatar, hosts of the 2022 World Cup, FIFA turned a blind eye and finally gave special permission for the match to go ahead.
The Khalifa Stadium in Doha will now host two games on the same day. At 16:00 (UK) the Qatar v Malaysia game will take place followed by the Spain v Uruguay match at 18:00 (UK).
Spain also have upcoming World Cup qualifiers in March. If they want to be the first in the group and qualify automatically to defend their title at Brazil 2014 then they must win the match v France in Paris.
