Following a run of only two wins in the last ten games, Fernando Roig wields the axe, with his club sliding perilously to the edge of the play-off zone.

Julio-VelázquezShortly after 9pm local time, pre-season promotion favourites Villarreal decided it was time for a change of manager, with their bid to bounce back to the Primera, faltering after recent results.

A brief statement by club president Fernando Roig, was issued via the club website:

“Villarreal CF has terminated the contract with coach Julio Velasquez. The Salamancan coach will attend first team training at the Sports City (16.00) to leave the club and the media, with whom he will attend a press conference. The club would like to thank Julio Velásquez for his dedication and services rendered and wishes him the best of luck in his career.”

As yet, there are no reports as to who his replacement will be, though it is unlikely that Villarreal will wait too long and could have their replacement at the helm, ahead of next weekend’s encounter with RM Castilla.
