Sergio Ballesteros receives offer from Chicago Fire

Former Levante centre-back, Sergio Ballesteros has confirmed that he’s received a one-year offer from MLS side Chicago Fire.

ballesterosBallesteros has been on the radar of several MLS sides since announcing that he would be leaving Levante but would either play in the United States or retire.

However, the Chicago Fire have apparently leapt at the chance to sign the 37-year-old journeyman as an ideal replacement for Chicago Fire’s Arne Friedrich who retires due to injuries.

Ballesteros sees the move to the US as an ideal situation, as he would not need to be the leader of the locker room, will be able to play longer in a less physically demanding league and his family would get to experience something unique.

Yet, due to the MLS salary structure, Ballesteros would need to be paid less than $300,000 per year so as not to take a Designated Player spot on the team’s roster, something he is more than willing to do at this stage in his career.

Ballesteros and Chicago have not officially begun negotiations, as the former Levante defender has also been sounded out by the New York Cosmos, who recently signed Villarreal legend, Marcos Senna.
