Atletico Madrid back in for Diego
The Brazilian has found his form once again in Germany, this time with Wolfsburg, and has attracted interest for his performances for Die Wolfe.
Simeone meanwhile is keen to bolster his attacking options over the summer, having already secured Leo Baptistao from city rivals Rayo Vallecano followed by the expected arrival of David Villa from Barcelona.
The Argentine is now set to resume talks with Diego, according to Spanish daily newspaper AS, with the 28-year-old rumoured to be returning to the Vicente Calderon ever since he left in 2012.
One potential stumbling block could be his wages, which currently stand at €5million per year, and Atleti would be looking to reduce that annual income should they sign him.
Los Colchoneros have Champions League football going in their favour, and the former Porto man could be persuaded to take a pay cut in order to play in Europe’s elite competition.
Atleti are also in talks to sign Malaga defender Martin Demichelis, as Simeone looks to add experience to his side to enable his squad to challenge on multiple fronts next season.
Diego’s current deal runs out next year, and Wolfsburg may choose to cash in on the Brazilian, who made 32 league appearances for the club last season, scoring 10 goals and creating a further seven in the process.
