San Mames Barria could be ready ahead of schedule
Athletic Club Bilbao has announced that the San Mames Barria stadium could be complete ahead of time in order to host the first home match of the season after it had been understood that the club would be forced to compete in the Anoeta.
Athletic Club Bilbao recently announced that the construction of the San Mames Barria was scheduled to be completed on 15 September meaning the club would be without a home stadium at the opening of the new season.
It was confirmed that the Basque club would play home matches in the Anoeta, the stadium of local rivals Real Sociedad, until the new grounds were completed.
However, Athletic Club has recently revealed that construction has been sped up in order for the stadium to be completed by the start of the new campaign.
Finishing the stadium in less than six weeks will prove to be a very difficult task, but the plan is to have the San Mames Barria ready for the first home game of season on matchday 2 against Osasuna.
Though the plan is for the construction to be finished early, the club is still aware that they may have to make use of the Anoeta if things are not completed beforehand.
However, manager Ernesto Valverde has stated that he would like for his squad to train at the new stadium several times before hosting a match there for his players to become familiar with the pitch.
