Barcelona has spent the summer trying to sign a center back, and as the signing of Thiago Silva has proven impossible, the club is now looking for alternatives.

VerginiReports now suggest that the new coach Gerardo Martino could bring one of his former players, Santiago Vergini, with him.

Vergini is a 24-year-old Argentine who plays as a center back. Last season, he played for Martino’s Newell’s Old Boys. Vergini has also performed with Argentina’s national team once.

The 24-year-old hasn’t appeared in Barcelona’s plans earlier, but the new coach’s arrival could see the Catalans change their plans according to the new manager’s wishes. Reportedly, Martino rates Vergini highly and would like to bring the center back with him to Barcelona.

Barcelona is yet to make an official approach towards the Argentine as the final plans for the transfer season are expected to be discussed later in a meeting between the club president Sandro Rosell and the new coach Gerardo Martino.
