Barça target Paris Saint Germain centre-back…Mamadou Sakho
Barcelona have been denied a top-flight centre-back at every turn and have now come full circle and are returning to Paris Saint Germain to solve their defensive woes, but this time, they aren’t going for Thiago Silva.
According to Barcelona-based Spanish sports daily, SPORT, After having bids for PSG’s Thiago Silva, Chelsea’s David Luiz and Liverpool’s Daniel Agger all rejected, Barcelona are left with no solid centre-back option before the start of La Liga this weekend and now decided to pursue former PSG captain and promising young defender, Mamadou Sakho to be the one to bolster their defensive backline for the foreseeable future.
Following the signing of Thiago Silva last season and Marquinhos this summer, Sakho is left without a solid starting role under new manager, Laurent Blanc and is desperate to earn minutes to improve his chances of making it to the 2014 World Cup.
The 23-year-old Frenchman is out of contract in June and is desperate to make the move to a top flight club like Barcelona and shows all the attributes; powerful, strong, physical and quick, that Barcelona is looking in their replacement for legendary captain, Carles Puyol, who has been slowed by countless injuries.
Sakho’s main benefit, as far as Barcelona is concerned, is that he comes at a very low cost of less than €15 million and is eager to prove his is capable of performing at the highest level.
Paris Saint Germain and Barcelona were in negotiations for Sakho last summer, but they weren’t able to come to an agreement, which shouldn’t be a problem this time around.
