Diego Costa pens new three-year contract extension with Atletico Madrid

Brazilian striker, Diego Costa has just signed a new three-year contract extension with Atletico Madrid that will keep him at the Vicente Calderon until 2018 and effectively closing they door on any transfer to English Premier League side, Liverpool, after their initial bid was rejected by the player and the club.


In an official statement from the club, Costa expressed joy in signing a new contract and staying with the club, while Atleti exec, Jose Luis Perez Caminero was also pleased with the new deal and feels it is a cause for all of Atletico Madrid to celebrate.

Atletico Madrid and Diego Costa have reached an agreement to extend the contract of  hispanobrasileño striker for three more seasons, committing him to our club runs until June 30, 2018. The striker, born in Lagarto, Brazil, 24 years ago, was delighted with the agreement that has been signed with our company:

“I am delighted with this agreement after fighting a long time to win the respect and affection of the fans, the peers and people in the club. It`s a very special moment, I am very happy here. “

Diego Costa only had words of gratitude for the trust Atletico Madrid has shown in him:

“I thank the club for making me this offer to keep me here for a long time and hope to become a much bigger player and conquer all the objectives of our team.”

The striker, who has recently acquired dual nationality, is an important cog for Los Colchoneros, as evidenced by his numbers last season, in which he scored 20 goals, ten of them in La Liga and eight in the Copa del Rey, one of the which was in the final at the Santiago Bernabeu, a title Atletico Madrid would go on to win.

In this sense, José Luis Pérez Caminero welcomed the agreement signed with the striker: 

“This was one of the priorities of the club and is a great news for all of Atletico. Diego Costa is one of the key pieces of our team and following our policy to maintain this core, which has given us so much success in recent years, extending his contract was one of our goals. “
