Winning start was crucial for Valencia, says Costa
Ricardo Costa was pleased that Valencia could start the new season with victory in front of their home fans, after scoring the winner against Málaga on Saturday night.
After their 1-0 win in their opening match of the season against Málaga, which kicked off on Saturday and finished on Sunday, Valencia forward Ricardo Costa stressed the importance of getting off to a winning start to the season.
“The most important thing was the win and starting the season with a victory. It was a hard fought victory and I think the team has worked well, even though it’s a little strange playing at this hour.”
Costa was respectful of the difficulty they had facing Málaga, who had aggressively closed down threats from Valencia for much of the game, particularly the creativity of Ever Banega.
“We tried to play the ball between their lines, but they closed down the channels for Banega. That made things more complicated for us, especially playing through the middle and that forced us deeper and sucked our wide players inside. We managed to win though and that’s crucial for us.”
After the first competitive outing of the season, Costa said that the new arrivals are adapting well and getting into the rhythm of things at the club, but knows they have a long season ahead.
“Pre-season is pre-season and something different to when the competitive games come. The new guys are fitting in well, but we know there’s eleven months of hard work ahead of us.”
