Xabi Alonso undergoes successful foot surgery
Real Madrid defensive midfielder underwent successful surgery to repair a fracture in the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot on Wednesday morning in Murcia and is expected to be out of action for at least three months.
Alonso was on his way back from last year’s season-ending surgery to repair a torn groin muscle, when he suffered the broken foot at the team’s training on Tuesday at Valdebebas.
Alonso was operated on, on Wednesday, at the Quirón hospital by the doctors Mariano de Prado and Pedro Luis Ripoll, who have performed two other surgeries on Alonso, one to repair a similar injury Xabi suffered in 2001 while with Real Sociedad and another when he was at Liverpool.
The 31-year-old will be out of action until at least Christmas, which will seriously threaten his chances of making it to the 2014 World Cup, as he will miss Spain’s upcoming qualifiers.
