Former Real Madrid defender, Raul Albiol recently dropped a bombshell about last season’s downfall under former manager, Jose Mourinho, revealing that the players were fighting in the locker room and it was a blessing that the season ended.
In an interview with the programme, Tiki Taka, Albiol discussed why he chose to leave Real Madrid for Rafa Benitez’ Napoli and the toxic atmosphere at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“It was hard to keep the peace. We did not reach our objectives and we knew Mourinho was not going to continue as manager. Some players had confrontations and we couldn’t wait for the season to end and everyone make their decision.
“I was fine at the Spanish club, but I decided to leave because I didn’t enjoy most of the field and I didn’t have the available playing time that I wanted. Now I’m happy at Napoli and we will surely fight hard to win the championship.”
Albiol then discussed his new life in Napoli and reuniting with his old teammates.
“I’m part of this new project, with great perspectives. This city is very passionate toward their players. There are pictures of [Diego] Maradona in almost every store and restaurant.
“I was lucky enough to find some of my old team-mates from Real here and, in the case of Pepe Reina, from the national team too.
“The fans want us to win the league, but it will not be easy.”
