Forma Barca handball star considers candidacy for President
Former FC Barcelona and Spain handball star Enric Masip, considered one of the greatest players of all time in the sport, is considering running as President of the club.
FC Barcelona are “more than just a club” and feature not only football amongst their activities. Amongst a number of sports such as roller hockey, basketball and indoor football and numerous amateur sports, the club have also boasted one of the most prominent handball teams in the history of the sport in Spain.
One of their leading stars, Enric Masip, who retired from the game in 2004 because of injury, is now weighing up his options to run for the Presidency of the club, as an alternative candidate to Sandro Rosell and Joan Laporta.
Speaking to Cadena Sur radio, Masip, who is currently involved with the FC Barcelona Foundatuon, revealed his intentions, suggesting that by running for candidacy he might offer something different to the usual candidates.
“I wish to present my candidacy, because I have the enthusiasm to do so, without anyone behind me, to give my service to the club of my life. We need some fresh air.”
Masip is still somewhat resentful of the way he was treated by the club, when he was forced to retire from handball, following a foot injury.
“I’m hurt, resentful and pained by the way I had to leave Barca. Treating me how they did was avoidable, but it was also a personal matter.”
Masip also stated his intention to find backers and denied that he would be linked with the Presidency bid of Joan Laporta.
“I know that people have been associating me with Laporta, but that’s completely false. I don’t have anyone behind me. To present my candidacy is a dream, but it’s not everything in my life. At the moment, I have no financial guarantees and backing to present my candidacy. Right now I’m working with an idea, that I can develop further.”
