David Villa asked to be substituted in the second-half, during the 2-1 victory against Celta Vigo.

David Villa injured against Celta Vigo for Atletico MadridShortly before Diego Costa scored Atlético Madrid’s second goal of the game, there will have been concern for Spain manager Vicente Del Bosque, when striker David Villa signalled to the bench, that he couldn’t continue.

As Villa gingerly left the field in the 57th minute, the immediate assumption would clearly be that he might have to withdraw from the Spanish squad, for the forthcoming matches against Belarus and Georgia.

After the game though, Atlético manager Diego Simeone indicated that ahead of further tests, the player had suffered “a not so worrying ankle injury,” without elaborating further on the matter.

This would suggest that David Villa will still link up with the Spain squad, but any assessment regarding his fitness to feature in either of the two games next week, will be based upon the judgement of the national team medical staff.
