Enrique: Mallo’s sending off complicated matters

Celta Vigo manager, Luis Enrique lamented his side’s elimination from the Copa del Rey following a 4-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday evening and feels that the sending off of Hugo Mallo decided the match and killed their chances of coming back from two goals down.

Luis EnriqueIn his post-match press conference, Enrique spoke about the disappointing match and Athletic Bilbao’s dominating performance.

“Even with eleven players, playing Athletic is very hard.  Going down to 10 men after the beginning of the second half with a two-goal disadvantage made things complicated.  Like we planned, we came out to hurt Athletic with the idea that we would create dangerous situations and take advantage of our goal-scoring opportunities, but as the minutes passed, Athletic played the well and it made things difficult for us, but being down 2-0 after the break was too much.

“We knew that scoring a goal would make life difficult for Athletic.”

When asked about what he thought of Mallo’s suspension and the validity of the foul, Enrique brushed off the question, clearly annoyed by the entire situation.

“It doesn’t matter what I think.”
