UDATE: Xabi Alonso stays in Valencia to undergo medical tests for possible damage to his eardrum
Real Madrid defensive midfielder, Xabi Alonso did not fly back with the rest of the team following their thrilling 2-3 win over Valencia on Sunday evening, in order to undergo medical tests for possible damage to his eardrum.
According to Spanish radio programme, Al Primer Toque, Valencia’s Jeremy Mathieu struck Alonso in the ear at the 58th minute, leveling Alonso and leaving him on the ground in pain.
However, Alonso would get up and play the remaining half hour, but following the match, it became clear that it was more than just a simple knock and it was determined by the medical staff that Alonso should remain in Valencia and undergo scans to determine the extent of the injury rather than risk flying and doing serious damage.
The club has yet to comment on Alonso’s status and will closely monitor the status of one of their most coveted playmakers going forward.
UPDATE: The club has confirmed that Xabi Alonso suffered a perforation of his left eardrum, and will undergo more tests when he arrives back in Madrid.
