Iturralde: Most Spanish referees are Real Madrid fans

Former Spanish football referee, Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez recently confirmed that referees are in fact from this planet and not Mars, while also admitting that the majority of referees in Spanish football are Real Madrid fans, but insists that that’s only because most of Spain are divided into either Real Madrid or Barcelona fans.

In an interview with Spanish television station, Cuatro’s ‘Tiki Taka’ programme, Iturralde insisted that it’s normal that referees have their favourite teams, as they are fans of the game just like anyone else, but adds that being a fan of a certain team does not prevent them from being professional and doing their job, a point many Spanish football fans would eagerly contest.

“Referees don’t come from Mars.  You get into officiating because you love football, and if you like football, I don’t think there’s anyone who doesn’t like a certain team.  I had the luck of being born in Bilbao and in Bilbao the people support Athletic.  However, the rest of Spain for the most part, support Real Madrid or Barcelona, because they are the teams that win and that’s how it is.  And from that come the referees, the majority of whom support Real Madrid.

“However, that doesn’t mean that when they officiate a game they aren’t professionals.  And with players it’s the same.  Alkorta, when he played in Madrid against Athletic, I didn’t treat him differently.

“Before, the majority of Spain was with Madrid, but now Barcelona are gaining ground.”
