Barcelona centre-back, Carles Puyol is a last-minute scratch for Sunday evening’s match against Sevilla after the captain suffered a back injury and informed the medical and coaching staff that he would be unable to feature in this evening’s contest.

As the squad assembled to make the trip to Andalusia, Puyol informed the medical staff of the back pain and was removed as a precaution until he is able to undergo further testing.

Newly recovered winger, Ibrahim Affelay will take his place on the 18-man squad.

Puyol’s injury comes at the worst time for Barcelona, as they are already without Jordi Alba and Javier Mascherano, who are both banned from the match against Sevilla due to yellow card accumulations.

Puyol’s injury leaves only Gerard Pique and Marc Bartra at the centre-back position, while the left-back and right-back spots will need to be covered by Adriano, Dani Alves and Martin Montoya, who are all making the trip.
