Varane: It’s great to be back on the pitch after so long
Real Madrid centre-back, Raphael Varane made his triumphant return to the starting line-up in Los Blancos’ 0-2 2nd leg Copa del Rey semi-final win over cross-town rivals, Atletico Madrid and the Frenchman is happy to have contributed to helping his side reach the final and his own personal performance after missing the majority of the season due to a persistent knee injury.
In his post-match interview, Varane spoke about his feelings after being sidelined for so long and admits that he and the medical staff will continue to monitor the knee to see if it swells up.
“I felt great. It is great to be back out on the field after so long. We’re going to see how the knee responds over the next few days, to see if it swells. I haven’t had any problems during the match and I have trained hard to get to this point. So far I have played one match and we’ll see if I can play two in a row. The team needs all of the players and we have to be ready if we want to win titles. Everyone is thinking about that.”
Varane then spoke about the win, which was highlighted by the team’s strong performance in defence.
“We played well, we won and got through to the cup final. It was a perfect night. I do not care who our opponents are in the final, the important thing is to win. The team played compact and worked well to get the result. We have to keep going as we are.”
Varane concluded by stating that he didn’t see the lighter thrown at Cristiano Ronaldo, but stated that the 2013 Ballon d’Or winner is fine.
“I didn’t see it, but it is nothing serious.”
