Koke: We’ll face this weekend’s derby like a final

Atletico Madrid midfielder, Koke insisted that they will face this weekend’s Madrid Derby against cross-town rivals, Real Madrid like they will any other match, as if it were a final.

In a press conference on Thursday morning, Koke spoke the lessons learned from the loss against Osasuna and this weekend’s derby, which could determine the future of their season.

“The loss in Pamplona is in the past. It was hard to digest.  It was a significant defeat because we played hard.  Now we here, behind Madrid.  We’re really looking forward to the derby.

“We will go game by game but we know that a loss would take away a lot of options as we’d be down by six points, but there’s still a lot left in La Liga.

“The main objective is to get into the Champions League and make this a long-term project and those are being met. We must think of ourselves and not the opponent.  We’ve had a long week to work things out and we look good. You always like playing in derbies and even more so when you win.  It’ll be different than the previous games we’ve played against them.  We both played each other a lot.

“With each passing day we have more ambition.  We are where we are for that reason.  It is impossible to win everything.  Not even Madrid and Barcelona can do it.”

Koke then analysed their opponent and admitted that they will be very difficult to beat but not impossible.

“Madrid are playing very well and had a great game against Germany on Wednesday, but Sunday will be different.

“Defensively, they are very good and they have great players on the attack.  We’ll see how we attack them, but no one is invincible.”
