Italian national team goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon recently admitted that his good friend, Iker Casillas’ situation is a unique one and the veteran still considers the Real Madrid shot-stopper to be one of the best in the game.
In his pre-match press conference, Buffon spoke about his own health and future.
“I’m in good form. I have a lot of experience under my belt and I enjoy a challenge. I want to continue playing. The only real answer I can give is on the pitch. I play with freedom and responsibility. I feel useful.”
Buffon went on to discuss the situation of Spain captain, Iker Casillas and his playing situation.
“I’ve known him for many years, his is a special case. In the end, when it comes to these types of keepers, it’s not the amount of games you play but the quality of the performances. This will only help make him stronger.
“Who is the best goalkeeper at the moment? There’s no right answer. For Italians, they’d say it was me. For Spaniards it’d be Iker, for others it’d be Cech or Neuer. There are times when one is better than the others and so on. The most important thing is consistency.”
Buffon concluded by discussing Wednesday’s match against Spain, an opponent they’ve met many times before.
“The match against Spain is important but it’s still only a friendly. It can’t be compared to an official match. We want to continue the process of strengthening our team. We don’t see it as we’re out for revenge, if not to beat a great opponent.”
